In this inspiring TED talk from the TED Global Conference in Edinborough, Scotland, Economist Tim Hartford pontificates on the importance of trial and error in solving problems in a complex world. The broader lesson can certainly be applied to marketing in the form of testing. All too often we’re so certain that the decision or strategy that we take is the right one, and even worse we become entrenched and defensive when someone challenges us. Marketing should be pursued with an open mind, we’re incredibly lucky that part of our job is to fail (so long as we’re testing) without the worry of someone getting hurt or sick, or losing massive amounts of money. Embrace it, test as much as possible, it can be a lot of extra work but you’ll become much smarter in the process.
